Sylvan Lake town council received an update last week on plans to build a Health and Wellness Healing Hub in the community.

The update included an overview on grant funding received to date, the purpose of the Hub, and its conceptual design along 47 Avenue, west of 52 Street.

Town officials say two separate New Horizons for Seniors grants were submitted by the Town of Sylvan Lake FCSS in 2019 and 2020, successfully receiving $50,000 in total towards the Health and Wellness Healing Hub initiative to support the well-being of seniors.

In April, Town of Sylvan Lake FCSS was successful in obtaining $34,000 from the Canadian Mental Health Association towards the initiative, with an expansion to include all age demographics, and a completion date for March 2022. Total grant funds obtained for the Health and Wellness Healing Hub to date is $84,000.00.

The grant approved design includes a gazebo, labyrinth walk, contemplative space, Zen Garden, Wisdom Circle, well-being facilitation area, positive messaging rock garden, benches, bridges, fruit trees, shrubs, signage for the Hub, trail around the hub, and sound placement such as manually operated wind chimes to be incorporated into the phase 1 conceptual design. Additionally, an overall concept plan for the park was developed to assist with future planning and additional grant applications.

Officials say the objectives of the Health and Wellness Healing Hub is to have a park design and programs to support community members through all life stages. They also aim to provide an environment that supports community mental health and well-being, incorporate stages of life, social connection, environment, culture, and building well-being into the design and programs that will take place at the Healing Hub.

It’s further hoped to build community engagement by utilizing local assets, focus groups, and community members in the planning of collaborative program activities/events and future Healing Hub development.

The Town’s Parks department will provide grass cutting and watering of shrubs and trees, which is currently part of Parks regular duties for the area. Any costs incurred by Parks to project manage the installation will be charged to the grant budget, according to Town officials.
