Addressing Food Security Issues

Echo Lacombe excited to launch food rescue program

A group that seeks to improve the quality of life in Lacombe is taking on an ambitious project to start a food rescue program in the community.

“It’s a relatively new concept gaining momentum across the world,” explains Echo Lacombe Association board member David Jeffrey, in a press release. “The goal is to save edible food from the landfill, which directly addresses both food security issues and a growing environmental concern.”

Echo Lacombe officials say it is estimated the world wastes one third of its food supply each year.

Echo has secured community support from Lacombe Ford for a transport vehicle, Lacombe Signmasters for signage, and Vesta Energy has made a financial contribution. The City of Lacombe is providing a temporary home for the program in the former Parkland Regional Library building.

Echo also established a relationship with Second Harvest, a national food rescue program with ties to several potential donors. Second Harvest also has a downloadable app that can be used to facilitate a smooth donation process.

“We are extremely grateful for the support we have received to date,” adds Jeffrey.

With over 25 volunteers already committed to the project, the next step, according to officials, is to establish relationships with those interested in donating food that would otherwise end up in the landfill.

It’s further noted that Echo could also benefit from any new or used refrigeration equipment the community can spare for the project.

The goal is to have something ready to open for mid-July.
