An inadvertent gunshot fired in Penhold this week led to Mounties making a significant drugs and weapons seizure.

It was at 10:30 p.m. this past Monday when Innisfail RCMP were dispatched to a report of a gunshot being fired into the basement suite of a rental property in Penhold. Mounties determined the gunshot came from the upstairs suite of the property.

Two men who were tenants of the suite were arrested and the scene was secured for further investigation.

Tuesday morning, Innisfail RCMP obtained a search warrant for the residence which resulted in the seizure of five firearms, two of which police say were loaded, along with 1,000 rounds of ammunition, two high capacity magazines, and an additional prohibited weapon.

Over $40,00.00 in cash was located as well as a large amount of illicit drugs including 885 grams of suspected Fentanyl, 193 tabs of suspected LSD, 14 grams of suspected Magic Mushrooms, and six grams of suspected Cocaine. In addition, two kilograms of an unknown white powder has been seized and sent for analysis.

Amir Spiridonov, 21, and Alex Thiessen, 19, both from Penhold have been jointly charged with twenty-five criminal offences:

• Possession for the purpose of trafficking (x5)

• Possession of stolen property over $5000

• Possession of stolen property under $5000

• Possession of a firearm/weapon obtained by commission of offence

• Unauthorized possession of firearm (x3)

• Unauthorized possession of a prohibited weapon (x4)

• Possession of a weapon dangerous to public peace

• Possession of a prohibited/restricted firearm with ammunition (x3)

• Careless use of a firearm

• Unsafe storage/handling of firearm (x5)

Following a Judicial hearing, Spiridonov and Thiessen did not speak to bail and are scheduled to appear in Red Deer provincial court on June 10.

“This is a significant size drug seizure and the RCMP remains fully committed in building safe communities and enforcing laws to their fullest extent in order to achieve this goal. Members of the public who suspect drug activity in their community are encouraged to contact their local RCMP detachment,” Mounties said in a release.
