The Hunting Hills are alive… with the sound of music

Hunting Hills High School presents The Sound of Music, a production filmed for the entire community to enjoy.

Normally, the public would be welcomed to the school to enjoy the theatre program’s production but this hasn’t been a normal year.

Instead, the media arts department at HHHS teamed up with the theatre program to film the 32-student show and provide it to the masses online.

“COVID-19 has presented some challenges this year, but we are really thrilled with how our production has turned out,” said Coleman Miller, teacher at Hunting Hills High School. “When we started auditioning in September, we hoped that we could move forward with a production because we were unsure how things would change at that time. But it was about two or three weeks after that we got the word that we could practice together while still following health guidelines.”

“We mic’d the kids up to a sound system so they still sang and acted live. It was similar to filming a movie,” said Miller. “We recorded it in our drama room at Hunting Hills because it was already outfitted with lighting and staging. We tried to get two of three takes of every piece of the show.”

The experience also presented opportunities students haven’t had before, such as filming in the drama room and making adjustments to the set that wouldn’t be conducive to the live theatre experience.

“It was a great challenge to try to film the production, edit and place it online over a short time period,” said Dom Gomes, another teacher involved in the show. “The kids were amazing, there were some special moments that organically happened when the whole cast and crew were led on a singalong started by Cameron Roscoe. That moment gave me goosebumps as I watched these kids bond and celebrate a wonderful achievement they created.”
