Two central Alberta men are facing numerous charges after police foiled a break-in in progress where the suspects smashed through the front entrance of a gas station in an attempt to steal an ATM.

It happened shortly before 3:00 a.m. on May 18, when Red Deer RCMP members responded to an alarm at a gas station in north Red Deer. Upon their arrival, officers observed that a truck had smashed through the front entrance of the gas station and the suspects attempting to remove an ATM.

Mounties say two male suspects fled in the vehicle upon police arrival. However, the driver lost control of the vehicle and crashed into another business in the Northlands Industrial Park, where they then fled on foot.

Police Dog Services was dispatched and were able to track the suspects. The two men were located and arrested on top of a nearby commercial building.

Ian Vanderlinde, 28, of Innisfail, faces 14 charges, including several firearms and ammunition-related charges, mischief over $5000, break and entering, failure to comply with a release order, and failure to comply with undertaking.

Justin Duperron, 34, of Red Deer, faces 34 charges, including mischief, possession of property obtained by crime, possession of break-in instruments, break and entering, flight from police, possession of a controlled substance, multiple failure to comply charges, multiple possession of weapons, firearms and ammunition charges, and multiple careless use of firearm charges.

Vanderlinde and Duperron have been remanded into custody and are scheduled to appear in Red Deer Provincial Court on June 3.
