Outdoor recreation facilities reopen June 1 in Ponoka

May 31, 2021 | 5:06 PM

Outdoor recreation facilities are set to reopen for public use in Ponoka on June 1, following the announcement of the provincial government’s ‘Open for Summer Plan’ last week.

Officials say all Town soccer fields and ball diamonds will be open for use by local sports groups, as well as by families and individuals when the fields aren’t in use. Facility users are asked to follow current public health restrictions including the outdoor gathering limit of up to 10 people unless they are part of your household.

The Ponoka Splash Park reopened for public use on May 29, and the Hamilton’s Skate Park and all other parks, trails and playgrounds in Ponoka remain open for citizens to enjoy.

The Ponoka Aquaplex is anticipated to reopen in mid-June once provincial health restrictions allow indoor recreation facilities to open. More details about the exact date of the Aquaplex reopening and available programming will be announced shortly after the provincial government approves the launch of Stage 2 of its ‘Open for Summer Plan’ in June.

“Town staff are busy planning and preparing for the reopening of the Aquaplex. We’re excited to be able to welcome our citizens back to the facility in a safe manner once we’re allowed to reopen,” said Andrew Jones, Town of Ponoka Manager of Parks, Recreation and Facilities, in a press release.

Officials say the Ponoka Arena Complex will remain closed until early August to allow for the installation of a new ice plant and other facility improvements that are underway at the Arena.

“We anticipate reopening the Arena to ice users in early August – more than a full month earlier than we normally reopen. This will provide our sport user groups with considerably more ice time at the start of the upcoming season,” said Jones.

“The increased efficiency offered by the new ice plant will allow the Town to expand its regular ice season and host summer training camps in Ponoka. This creates an exciting opportunity that will greatly enhance the quality of life benefits that the arena provides to our community,” added Jones.

He noted the old ice plant couldn’t keep up with ice making in warm weather due to its age and inefficiency.
