Man shot and killed by police near Red Deer Regional Hospital

May 24, 2021 | 10:45 PM

A man was shot and killed by police Monday night during an incident near Red Deer Regional Hospital.

RCMP officers were responding at 9 p.m. to multiple driving complaints when they stopped a vehicle in the parkade at the hospital.

A confrontation ensued between the officers and the driver of the vehicle during which officers fired gunshots resulting in fatal injury to the man.

Police have contained the area and the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is attending the scene to initiate an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of the man.

No RCMP officers sustained injuries during the confrontation.

Access to the parkade will be restricted while police and ASIRT investigate the incident.

Independent of ASIRT’s investigation, the RCMP says its internal review process has been implemented to gather a full account of what took place during this incident. The RCMP says it is fully cooperating with ASIRT and will not be commenting further on this incident.
