Loss prevention officer stabbed at south Red Deer Walmart

May 22, 2021 | 7:52 PM

RCMP say a loss prevention officer at Red Deer’s south Walmart location was stabbed Saturday afternoon.

Cpl. Troy Savinkoff with Alberta RCMP says the incident happened around 4 p.m. when the 27-year-old officer confronted a man he had grounds to believe was shoplifting.

Savinkoff says the item in question was ice cream.

“At that time, a physical altercation took place and the security guard was stabbed at least three times,” Savinkoff says. “The guard was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and the suspect is still at large.”

It’s said the officer didn’t realize he was stabbed until after chasing the suspect a short distance. RCMP couldn’t say where on the guard’s body that he was stabbed.

He was treated by EMS on scene and was well enough to be released.

Savinkoff says the weapon is believed to have been a kitchen-style knife, though he couldn’t say if it was small or large.

More details about the suspect are pending, police say.
