A pair of Drayton Valley residents are facing drug and weapons charges following police searches at two local residences last week.

On May 14, after a lengthy investigation, Drayton Valley RCMP General Investigation Section (GIS), with the assistance of Drayton Valley RCMP, arrested two individuals and executed search warrants at two residences in Drayton Valley associated to drug trafficking.

During the search of these residences police seized what is believed to be 72 grams of fentanyl, 124 grams of methamphetamine, eight grams of cocaine, psilocybin (mushrooms), lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) and pepper spray.

Stephen Craig Spurrell, 37, and Jamie Anne Befus, 23, have been jointly charged with three counts of possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking, two counts of possession of a controlled substance, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and possession of proceeds of crime.

Following judicial hearings, both Spurrell and Befus were released from custody and are scheduled to appear in Drayton Valley provincial court on June 15.

“The opioid crisis in Alberta continues with Alberta communities seeing a record number of fatal fentanyl overdoses in the first couple of months of 2021 alone,” says Cpl. Ryan Hoetmer, NCOi/c of Drayton Valley RCMP GIS, in a press release. “Drayton Valley is not immune to this crisis and as police, we see the destruction that fentanyl addiction has on our community. We as a police force are dedicated to taking enforcement action against anyone who chooses to profit off the sale of this deadly product.”
