Ponoka celebrating International Trails Day in June

May 19, 2021 | 11:12 AM

Residents of Ponoka and the surrounding area are being encouraged to celebrate International Trails Day along the community’s scenic river valley trail system from June 1 – 7.

Starting June 1, town officials note six different QR codes will be placed along the Battle River Valley trail system. Each QR Code will link you to information about trail systems in Canada to help promote International Trails Day on June 5.

To scan QR codes, simply open your smart phone’s camera application and hold your phone close enough to the code so it fills most of the camera screen. A link should then appear on your screen. Click the link on your screen to visit the fact and registration page, then read the fun trail fact and enter your information at each QR code.

To be entered in the Town of Ponoka’s prize draw, participants must do the following:

  • Scan all QR codes in order from one to six. The first QR code is located at the Community Garden (located at the end of 35 Street). The trail will then continue north to the rest of the codes;
  • Scan all six codes in order within a 24-hour time period;
  • Input your name and contact info (email or phone) for each QR code you scan. Please use the same contact info at each code.

Town officials say the distance from the first QR code to the last one is approximately 5 kilometres. Participants have until the end of the day on June 7 to complete the trail event and sign up for the prize draw. The Town of Ponoka will randomly generate a name from the list of participants to win the prize (a Town swag basket) and the winner will be contacted.

International Trails Day promotes public awareness and appreciation for trails and the people who build and maintain them. The Town of Ponoka has more than 10 kilometres of paved trails for residents and visitors to enjoy.

Citizens are reminded to please continue to follow provincial health requirements while participating in the International Trails Day event, including physical distancing from those outside of your household.
