Application Hearing

Defence applies to strike guilty plea in Lacombe fatal shooting

A hearing is scheduled to take place this summer for a man charged in the fatal shooting of a young Ponoka man in Lacombe.

The Aug. 5 hearing is for a defence application to strike Tyler John Campbell’s guilty plea to manslaughter in the death of 20-year-old Jeffery Kraft on Dec. 15, 2019.

Campbell, 28, pled guilty to manslaughter last November. However, after a joint Crown and defence submission of a seven-year prison sentence that was twice rejected by Judge Jim Hunter, Campbell is now seeking to withdraw his plea.

If Hunter approves the application, a date would be set for a preliminary hearing to determine if there’s enough evidence for the case to go to trial.
