Red Deer rental rates higher than last year, but still among country’s most affordable

Despite having higher rental rates when compared to a year ago, the city of Red Deer continues to have some of the most affordable rental accommodations across the country.

According to the latest National Rent Report published by Rentals.ca and Bullpen Research and Consulting, Red Deer placed 31st on a list of 35 Canadian cities mentioned in the report.

The average rent for a one-bedroom unit in Red Deer last month was $965, down 0.3 per cent from March’s rental rates, but 5.7 per cent higher than in April, 2020.

A two-bedroom unit rented for an average of $1,072 per month, the same as in March, but 6 per cent higher than in April of last year.

Elsewhere in Alberta, Calgary placed 25th on the list with an average rent of $1,191 per month, while a two-bedroom unit rented for an average of $1,483.

Fort McMurray placed 28th on the list, with an average rent of $1,067 per month for a one-bedroom unit, and $1,263 for a two-bedroom place.

Edmonton placed 29th on the list, with an average rent of $999 per month for a one-bedroom unit, and $1,238 for a two-bedroom residence.

Lethbridge placed 32nd on the list, with an average rent of $947 per month for a one-bedroom unit, and $1,075 for a two-bedroom.

Grande Prairie placed 34th on the list, with an average rent of $906 per month for a one-bedroom unit and $1,115 per month for a two-bedroom.

The border city, Lloydminster, rounded out the list at 35, reporting an average rent of $786 per month for a one-bedroom unit in April. A two-bedroom rented for an average of $899 per month.

Vancouver topped the list of having the most expensive rents in Canada last month. A one-bedroom unit in that city rented for an average of $1,935 per month, while a two-bedroom rented for an average of $2,578.
