Town and County send letter of support for Learning Centre

The Town of Rocky Mountain House and Clearwater County have chosen to show unity in their support of the Rocky Learning Centre in their fight against increased rental costs.

The increase is due to the Alberta Government’s approval of the Non-Government User Space Use Policy. Changes include the discontinuation of no-cost and partial cost-recovery occupancy agreements. Requirement to obtain a sponsor ministry support to have space in a government building for a full cost recovery or full cost recovery plus rate. An unsponsored non-government user can use government buildings under a market rate.

The Learning Centre was informed that as of April 1, 2022 their rental costs in the old provincial building they currently lease would increase to over half of their current operating grant funds from Alberta Advanced Education. The Rocky Learning Centre Team and Board has begun searching for a new location to rent in town to support a local landlord rather than paying Alberta Infrastructure.

Town and county council have sent a letter to the Ministry of Infrastructure noting their concern over the struggles these changes have made to the organization. The state that the Community Adult Learning Programs is a grassroots community-based program that provides much for the area.
