Habitat for Humanity launches $20,000 50/50 lotto

Habitat for Humanity Red Deer has launched its first ever 50/50 Lottery.

The $20,000 sweepstakes won’t last long with an early bird draw date of May 20. The final deadline is June 6, with a draw on June 8. Tickets are one for $10, three for $25 and five for $45.

One early bird winner will walk away with $1,500 to Wolf Creek Building Supply, Home Depot and the Habitat ReStore, while the winner of the main draw is guaranteed a minimum $4,000 prize and up to $10,000.

“We are currently closing in on the end of two duplex builds in Blackfalds. They’ll be finished in late June or July, with four families moving in,” says Rhyean Hylands, Development and Communications Coordinator, of the types of projects money raised will help with.

“At Habitat, our vision is a world where everyone has a decent place to live, so by purchasing a ticket in our 50/50, you’re helping us to fulfill that vision. Habitat brings communities together to help families build strength, stability and dependence through affordable home ownership.”

Habitat requires eligible move-in families to complete 500 hours of volunteer work, typically at the ReStore or at the actual home build.

Once the Blackfalds builds are done, Habitat can count 42 homes constructed throughout central Alberta in communities like Red Deer, Lacombe, Delburne, Three Hills and Sylvan Lake.

Homes are typically constructed by volunteers and partnering trade organizations, though additional builders were hired over the last year due to COVID-19 restrictions. That put Habitat a little more out of pocket than they’d normally be, though Hylands notes they’ve had record sales in recent months at the ReStore, which is located at 4732 78A Street Close in Red Deer.

The next build won’t happen until 2022, with a location yet to be announced.

However, a previous home built in Lacombe is becoming vacant, meaning there’s an opportunity for a new family to move in. A virtual information session is scheduled for May 19 from 6-7 p.m., with attendees able to learn about home ownership, eligibility and how to apply.

Volunteer hours are still required and can be completed at a variety of local non-profits, Hylands notes.
