Bowden Institution inmate dies from COVID-19 complications

The Correctional Service of Canada says an inmate at Bowden Institution died from apparent complications related to COVID-19.

The inmate passed away May 11 and his next of kin have been notified.

“As in all cases involving the death of an inmate, CSC has notified the coroner who will review the circumstances of the death,” reads a media release.

“CSC has dedicated health services and medical professionals in all of its institutions. We also work closely and collaboratively with local public health partners and hospitals to provide complete and quality medical care to those who need it and to prevent further spread of COVID-19.”

This is the sixth death related to COVID-19 among federally sentenced inmates and the first in Alberta.

The inmate’s name is not being released under provisions of the Privacy Act that allow CSC to release certain information at the time of a death in custody.

There have been 36 cases of COVID-19 at Bowden Institution, including 12 active cases, according to the CSC website.

Vaccination clinics were held at the prison on April 22 and 28.
