Lacombe city council has endorsed the Lacombe and District Historical Society’s proposed move to one of Lacombe’s most iconic landmarks – the Flatiron Building.

The Flatiron Interpretative Centre currently serves as the home to Lacombe Regional Tourism, who’ve recently decided to a mobile services operation creating an opening in its existing space.

The historical society evaluated several options before deciding on the Flatiron Building as its new home.

“Council is pleased to see the Lacombe and District Historical Society move into our most recognizable building,” Mayor Grant Creasey said. “This facility is part of our living past and is ideally suited for the society to showcase Lacombe’s roots.”

Once completed, the Historical Society will occupy the main floor and basement of the facility while simultaneously sharing second-floor office space with Lacombe Regional Tourism. The remainder of the space available will be made available to host Lacombe’s Public Art Collection.

The proposal will increase revenue for the Historical Society by enhancing the gift shop experience, offering new sales opportunities, and promoting exhibit sponsorships.

“The Lacombe & District Historical Society continues to work and offer collaborative opportunities for all heritage and culture groups in the City of Lacombe and Lacombe County,” Lacombe and District Historical Society Executive Director Melissa Blunden said. “The Flatiron Building is an integral part of the landscape of Lacombe and Central Alberta, making it an ideal location for these collaborative efforts to succeed. We are looking forward to the challenges and opportunities this will bring.”

The net increase in cost to the City of Lacombe for the new lease agreement is $5,000.
