Red Deer’s active COVID case count down for third-straight day

Red Deer has now seen a drop in its active COVID-19 case count for three-straight days.

There are 817 active cases in the city as of Tuesday, according to the latest numbers from the province. That’s down from 848 on Monday and nearly 100 fewer than Saturday’s record total of 911.

Recoveries are up 75 to 4,182 as the total number of COVID-19 cases attributed to Red Deer during the pandemic rose 42 to 5,037.

Red Deer’s death toll stemming from COVID-19 remains 38.

The Central Zone has 2,713 active cases as of Tuesday, a decrease of 94. There are 69 hospitalizations, down two, and nine people are now receiving intensive care for COVID-19 at Red Deer Regional Hospital. The zone has had 143 deaths linked to the virus, including one reported in the past day – a man in his 90s on May 10.

Across the province, there are now 24,998 active cases, down 440 from Monday, and 184,719 recovered cases, up 1,887.

Alberta’s total number of COVID-19 cases from the start of the pandemic stands at 211,836.

There are 1,449 new cases in the province today out of 11,852 tests in the past 24 hours for a positivity rate of 12.2 per cent.

There are now 705 Albertans in hospital with COVID-19, an increase of 15 from Monday. 163 are in the ICU, an increase of five, and there have been three more deaths linked to the virus bringing the province’s total to 2,119.

There were 256 new variant cases of concern identified in Alberta over the past day. Variants now make up 38.3 per cent (9,754) of Alberta’s active case count.

Alberta’s province-wide reproduction value for May 3-9 was 1.00, and 0.94 in areas outside of Calgary and Edmonton.

Over 1.94 million doses of the vaccine have been administered to date and seven per cent of Albertans are now fully vaccinated with two doses. Alberta expects to deliver its two-millionth vaccine dose on Wednesday.
