Red Deer sees drop in active COVID cases but records another death

Red Deer saw a drop in its active COVID-19 case count on Sunday, but also recorded another death linked to the virus.

The number of active cases in the city went from 911 on Saturday to 874 Sunday, a decrease of 37.

Recoveries are up 69 to 4,042 as the total number of COVID-19 cases in Red Deer since the start of the pandemic rose 33 to 4,954.

Red Deer’s latest death stemming from COVID-19, the 38th of the pandemic, occurred when a man in his sixties passed away May 7.

Alberta added another 1,633 cases on Sunday, including 411 variant cases of concern, out of 15,509 tests for a positivity rate of 10.5 per cent.

Active cases in the province now total 25,197, up 42 from Saturday. Variants make up 44.5 per cent (11,213) of Alberta’s total active cases.

There are 668 Albertans in hospital due to the virus, up seven over the past day, including 155 in intensive care, also up seven.

Recoveries across the province are up 1,589 to 181,483.

A total of two more deaths linked to the virus were reported in the past 24 hours to bring the province’s total to 2,110.

Alberta has delivered 1,889,039 doses of COVID-19 vaccine as of May 8, including 42,485 on Saturday. There are now 316,357 Albertans fully immunized with two doses.

The Central Zone has 2,844 active cases as of Sunday, an decrease of 73. There are 66 hospitalizations, up 11, and seven people are receiving intensive care for COVID-19 at Red Deer Regional Hospital. The zone has had 140 deaths linked to the virus.
