Red Deer with 886 active COVID-19 cases, one new death

Red Deer saw its number of active COVID-19 cases take a slight dip on Friday, going from 894 to 886.

Recoveries are up 64 to 3,923 as the total number of COVID-19 cases attributed to Red Deer rose 57 to 4,846.

Sadly, the city has recorded its 37th linked to COVID-19, a man in his 80s who passed away May 5.

Alberta reported 1,980 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday, including 479 variant cases of concern.

That’s out of 18,936 tests for a positivity rate of 10.4 per cent.

There are now 24,850 active cases in the province, up 353 from Thursday. Fifty-three percent of Alberta’s active cases (12,838) are variant cases of concern.

Alberta added 1,613 recoveries over the last 24 hours for a total of 178,149.

Hospitalizations are up five to 659, which includes 150 in intensive care, up four.

Four deaths linked to COVID-19 were reported in the past 24 hours to bring the province’s total to 2,106. The latest reported deaths also include:

• May 5, a female in her 80s in North Zone

• May 5, a male in his 60s in Calgary Zone

• May 5, a female in her 60s in Calgary Zone.

There are 2,901 active cases in the entire Central Zone as of Friday and 58 hospitalizations, including in intensive care at Red Deer Regional Hospital. There have now been 138 deaths in the Central Zone linked to COVID-19.
