STAR Catholic School Division is the latest Alberta school board to announce that it will not be piloting the Alberta government’s draft K-6 curriculum next year.

The Division said in a news release on May 4 that over the last month it conducted an in-depth analysis of the draft curriculum. The analysis included a comprehensive review of the curriculum by committees of teachers from each grade level, as well as surveys of both teachers and families.

Of the K-6 teachers surveyed, 98 percent said they would not be interested in piloting the draft curriculum, with most saying COVID-19 and concerns with the curriculum were contributing factors to their decision.

93 percent of parents surveyed said they were not in support of the Division participating in the pilot program.

Based on the feedback, the STAR Catholic Board of Trustees accepted Administration’s recommendation that the Division should not participate in piloting the draft curriculum in the 2021-2022 school year.

“This decision is one our Board takes very seriously. We are grateful for the thought and consideration that was put into the curriculum review and survey process to ensure our stakeholders were consulted and their voices were heard,” said Board Chair Michelle Lamer.

Lamer added, “Given the feedback received, we feel that this choice best represents the needs of our students, staff, families, and school communities. We thank all those who took the time to review the draft curriculum and share their thoughts on such an important matter.”

The Division said it encourages the province to pause the pilot process and conduct a thorough review involving more in-depth teacher participation and analysis.

They added that whatever decision is made by the province, its teachers will take advantage of any opportunities available in order to provide feedback on the curriculum.
