(9 p.m. Friday)

Emergency crews are battling a wildfire near the hamlet of Tomahawk in Parkland County.

An emergency alert sent out just before 9 p.m. said the wildfire is west of Tomahawk in the area of Range Road 62 and Range Road 70, and Township Roads 510 and 514, and that the fire is “moving rapidly in a northwest direction.”

Reports indicate the fire started at around 4:30 p.m.

A large plume of black smoke could be seen as far away as Drayton Valley, which is about 30 kilometres southeast of Tomahawk.

Fire growth is expected due to windy conditions. Officials say crews will be working overnight to contain the fire.

Residents who live west of Range Road 62 to the western border of Parkland County are advised to take all precautions and be prepared for possible immediate evacuation.

CTV Edmonton is reporting that RCMP are on scene and some residents have already been evacuated.
