Affordable Housing

Last town-owned home purchased by Habitat for Humanity

May 5, 2021 | 2:05 PM

Habitat for Humanity has purchased the third and final home from the Town of Rocky Mountain House in Creekside.

The nonprofit organization had approached the Town to purchase the vacant units located in Creekside, so that a family can move into their first home with a mortgage.

The group says it is well equipped to leverage various grants, and is far better suited to help and get in touch with those who would benefit best from the program.

In 2011, the Town of Rocky built three homes in the area as a means of offering affordable housing with the assistance of the affordable housing grant. The Town of Rocky payed roughly $66,000 per home. It cost the town around 6 thousand dollars yearly to operate above the rental revenue.

Habitat for Humanity purchased the home for $33,000, which was the same price it had paid for the previous two. They will keep the unit in their organization for a minimum of 10 years.

The nonprofit group had interest in purchasing the unit earlier, but a tenant was currently residing in, and planned to stay in the home until mid-2021. Rocky Director of Planning and Community Development Dean Schweder mentioned that the home became vacant in February, so he reached out to the Habitat for Humanity to inform them it was available.

Mayor Tammy Burke commented that, “There’s been some great success stories, and its wonderful seeing families enjoying these homes.”

Council voted unanimously to sell the home to Habitat for Humanity.
