The Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation selected Cystic Fibrosis Canada as its recipient charity for their online 50/50 draw Monday, May 3, in honour of cystic fibrosis awareness month.

“We were proud that the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation selected our charity of choice, Cystic Fibrosis Canada, for their record-setting 50/50 initiative,” says Jeff Labanovich, chief operating officer, CARSTAR. “CARSTAR’s fundraising for CF started when a franchise partner’s granddaughter was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis in 1997 and our CARSTAR franchise family came together to rally and raise money to fight the disease. We have only accelerated our fundraising efforts since then with over $4MM for cystic fibrosis-related charities, made possible by incredible partners like the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation.”

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a fatal genetic disease with no cure. CF causes various effects on the body, but mainly affects the digestive system and lungs. A defective gene causes a thick, buildup of mucus in the lungs, pancreas, and other organs leading to infections, extensive lung damage, and eventually, respiratory failure.

“Our partners play a pivotal role in helping us advance our mission, and we at Cystic Fibrosis Canada are immensely grateful for CARSTAR’s more than 20-year partnership,” said Carly Schur, chief development officer, Cystic Fibrosis Canada. “From car washes to ball hockey and golf tournaments, gala events, silent auctions and more, CARSTAR has been a truly dedicated supporter of Canadians living with cystic fibrosis. We are also incredibly grateful to the Edmonton Oilers, as well as Ryan and Breanne Nugent-Hopkins, who are enthusiastic champions of the cause. This support matters now more than ever, as we are on the cusp of incredible change for Canadians living with cystic fibrosis.”
