Red Deer with 881 active COVID-19 cases

The number of active COVID-19 cases in Red Deer rose slightly on Tuesday.

Updated data released by the province shows our city with 881 active cases, up 18 from Monday for a rate of 828 active cases per 100,000 people.

Recoveries are up 57 to 3,751 as the total number of COVID-19 cases attributed to Red Deer rose 75 to 4,668.

Red Deer’s death toll stemming from COVID-19 remains 36.

Province-wide, Alberta announced 1,743 new cases on Tuesday, including 876 variant cases of concern. That’s out of 14,585 tests for a positivity rate of 12 per cent.

The province’s active case count sits at 23,623, an increase of 15 over the past 24 hours, which includes 14,728 active variant cases (62.3%).

There are 671 hospitalizations because of COVID-19, an increase of three, including 150 in ICU, up four.

Recoveries sit at 172,931, an increase of 1,719.

Nine more deaths were reported in the past 24 hours to bring Alberta’s total linked to COVID-19 to 2,099.

The province has administered 1,668,455 vaccine doses as of May 3.

The Central Zone has a total of 2,836 active cases as of Tuesday and 62 hospitalizations, including nine in the ICU at Red Deer Regional Hospital. The zone has had 137 deaths linked to COVID-19, including a man in his 60s on April 30.

Premier Jason Kenney will speak to Albertans at 6 p.m. to announce further public health restrictions for Alberta.
