After dropping 13 games in a row the Red Deer Rebels are now on a winning streak.

Josh Tarzwell scored the overtime winner Sunday as the Rebels defeated the Calgary Hitmen 5-4 in WHL action at the Seven Chiefs Sportsplex at Tsuut’ina Nation.

Red Deer improved to 4-15-3-0 on the season while Calgary fell to 9-8-3-0.

Calgary opened the scoring 9:31 in to the first period as Sean Tschigerl ran his career best point streak to 11 games with his 12th goal of the season past Rebels goalie Chase Coward, who was making his second straight start after earning his first WHL win Saturday versus Edmonton.

Red Deer tied it at the 15:46 mark when Kyle Masters sprung Kalan Lind on a breakaway and the rookie forward zipped home his third goal of the season past Calgary netminder Jack McNaughton.

Arshdeep Bains gave Red Deer a 2-1 lead 4:19 into period two when he tucked home his seventh goal of the season.

But Tyson Galloway tied it for Calgary just over two minutes later at 6:35 when he snapped a wrister past Coward for his fourth goal on the year.

Red Deer opened up a two-goal lead on a pair of quick goals early in the third period.

With the Rebels on a five-minute powerplay due to a cross-checking major penalty given to Calgary’s Conner Gabruch, Lind found the back of the net for his second goal of the game and fourth on the season at the 1:12 mark.

Two minutes later, Bains followed suit with his second goal of the game to make it 4-2.

But the Calgary Hitmen responded quickly as Zac Funk tipped in his fourth goal of the year at 4:26 to make it 4-3.

Adam Kydd pulled the Hitmen even at 11:45 when he tipped home a point shot from Jackson van de Leest for a powerplay goal that ultimately set the stage for overtime.

In the extra frame, Coward made an early save for Red Deer and his teammates took it from there. Chris Douglas led the rush across the Calgary blue line, Kyle Masters took the puck to the net and Tarzwell followed up on the play to bang home the game winner, and his seventh goal of the season coming just 25 seconds into overtime.

Calgary outshot Red Deer 33-31 and was 1-for-3 on the powerplay while the Rebels were 1-for-1.

Ben King had three assists in the game and now has points in nine of his last ten games for Red Deer. King leads all Rebels players with 25 points on the season.

Bains and defenceman Jace Weir are now riding three-game point streaks for Red Deer.
