Respect Month to bring awareness around sexual violence

Apr 30, 2021 | 3:51 PM

The Central Alberta Sexual Assault Support Centre (CASASC) is dedicated to supporting those affected by sexual violence every day of the year.

In Alberta, May is Sexual Violence Awareness Month (SVAM). The goal of SVAM is to raise public awareness about sexual violence and to educate communities on how to prevent it.

This year CASASC will be focusing on the concept of respect for SVAM, expanding the annual Respect Day and the iRespect campaign into an entire month. iRespect is CASASC’s ongoing in-house awareness campaign. The goal of iRespect is to encourage everyone to conduct their lives and treat one another with respect. In this, sexual violence, and violence in general, will be eliminated.

This proactive campaign focuses on awareness and creating positive changes, dispelling the negative connotations of “rape culture.”

This is the seventh year CASASC has hosted a Respect Day community celebration. Last year’s celebration was held virtually. The iRespect campaign has been running successfully since 2014.

Throughout the month, CASASC will host several events including Respect Day (May 28), education-based social media takeovers, virtual discussions, iRespect yoga and the debut of an across central Alberta scavenger hunt (May 29).

More information and a schedule of events can be found on the CASASC website.

Join the conversation for the month by using the hashtag #SVAM for Sexual Violence Awareness Month and participate in the iRespect campaign using the hashtag#iRespect and #cultureofrespect on social media. Help us eliminate sexual violence in our community by creating a culture of respect.

CASASC is a voluntary, non-profit organization serving the Central Alberta region under the direction of a community-based Board of Directors. CASASC educates, supports and empowers individuals, families and communities regarding all aspects of sexual violence.
