Red Deer with 722 active COVID-19 cases

With tighter restrictions on the way, Red Deer has once again set a new record for active COVID-19 cases in the city.

As of Thursday, Red Deer is reporting 722 active cases of the virus, 10 more than the previous record of 712 set on Wednesday.

The number of cases identified in the city since the start of the pandemic is 4,244 – up 70 over the past 24 hours, while recoveries rose by 60 to 3,486. The number of deaths in Red Deer attributed to the virus remains at 36.

Red Deer will be subject to tighter COVID-19 restrictions announced by the provincial government starting Friday. Details on what those restrictions entail can be found here.

Province-wide, Alberta reported another 2,048 cases of coronavirus on Wednesday. That’s out of 20,582 tests for a positivity rate of 10.1 per cent.

The province has 21,385 active cases, 447 more than Wednesday, including 13,460 variants of concern (63 per cent).

There are 632 Albertans in hospital because of COVID-19, a decrease of 11, including 151 in intensive care, up six.

Three new deaths have also been linked to COVID-19 over the past 24 hours, bringing Alberta’s total to 2,075.

The Central Zone has 2,395 active cases as of Thursday, a one-day increase of 28. There are 55 hospitalizations, down one, and seven people are receiving intensive care for COVID-19 at Red Deer Regional Hospital, down one. The zone has had 133 deaths as a result of COVID-19, down one from Wednesday.

As of Thursday, 1,528,569 doses of vaccine have been administered in the province. There are 292,765 people that have received two doses of vaccine and are fully immunized.
