New trial dates set for man accused of fraud while posing as lawyer

New trial dates have been set for a Red Deer man accused of defrauding several people out of thousands of dollars while posing as a lawyer.

Chance Aaron Shaw, 29, will have a three-day trial from Nov. 22-24, 2021 in relation to three separate matters before the court. He was previously scheduled for two separate trials and a preliminary hearing this month.

Shaw faces 12 counts in relation to multiple alleged fraud-related incidents between Dec. 1, 2016 and Apr. 17, 2017. He was charged in July 2017 following a months-long RCMP investigation launched in March of that year.

Mounties say the investigation began after receiving a complaint that the suspect had represented himself as a lawyer and had taken money from his victims in exchange for reportedly preparing legal documents.

According to police, several more complaints then came in, with RCMP identifying a total of nine victims who reportedly dealt with the suspect in return for legal services.

Among those, a process server who was hired by the suspect to serve a civil claim, and one victim who grew suspicious and did not pay the suspect , who Mounties say operated under the fictitious name of SS & Associates LLP.

In June of 2017, police executed a search warrant at the suspect’s residence and seized electronics and documents relevant to the investigation.

Elsewhere, Shaw faces counts of fraud over $5000 and breach of conditions stemming from an incident on Feb. 2, 2018 where he’s accused of defrauding one person.

Shaw also faces 11 additional counts in relation to allegedly selling a motorcycle he didn’t own. The offences are said to have occurred between June 4 and July 21, 2019.
