Addiction treatment more accessible after user fees eliminated
A central Alberta woman is hoping to help save lives by further spreading the word about financial barriers being removed for those in need of addiction treatment.
Carmen Brown of Camrose says if more people knew user fees were waived last fall for Albertans seeking residential addiction treatment, more could be getting the help they need.
“I went to Aventa (Centre of Excellence for Women with Addictions) last year which is a six-week program, it’s trauma-informed so they really dig deep into your childhood traumas and things that have happened in your life and that’s when I finally found success,” says Brown.
“When you first go to treatment you have to jump through a few hurdles. One of them being you have to get the funding, you have to go to the doctor, you have to get all this stuff done, and it’s just discouraging if you get turned away for funding because then how are you supposed to pay for it?”
