Sylvan Lake family doctor can resume practice with conditions

A longtime Sylvan Lake doctor is now able to resume his practice provided he has a chaperone present when seeing patients under the age of 18.

Dr. Fred Janke was charged in June 2018 with making and distributing child pornography for conversations he had with an undercover police officer based in Victoria, B.C.

Janke was also accused of trying to make arrangements to commit sexual offences against a child.

The charges against Janke were dropped in November 2020 as the Crown saw little likelihood of a conviction. The Crown has one year to revisit the charges should new evidence become available.

Janke was president of the Alberta College of Family Physicians at the time of his arrest and was asked to voluntarily withdraw his services by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA).

The CPSA is resuming its internal investigation into Janke now that the criminal charges against him have been stayed.
