Red Deer sitting just shy of active cases record with 564

Red Deer now has 564 active cases of COVID-19, up 20 from Thursday.

That total is just 10 off the record of 574 set on Feb. 24 when about 40 per cent of the city’s active cases were attributable to an outbreak at Olymel.

On April 1, there were just 209 active cases in Red Deer, and there were 372 seven days ago.

In the last day, Red Deer added 46 new cases for a pandemic total of 3,877. Of those, 3,277 have recovered, up 26 from Thursday. There have been 36 deaths, none of which were reported today.

The province does not offer total or active variant cases by municipality.

Meantime, Alberta added 1,690 new cases of COVID-19 Friday. With 17,562 tests done, the one-day positivity rate is ~9.6 per cent.

Of the new cases, 1,184 are variants, meaning ~60.4 per cent (11,738) of the province’s 19,466 total active cases are variants, up 0.4 per cent from a day ago.

The province’s overall active case count is up 284 from yesterday.

Sadly, Alberta Health is also reporting five new deaths, giving the province a total of 2,059 since the pandemic began in March 2020.

Details of the latest fatalities are as follows:

· Date of death: April 21. A female in her 60s in Calgary Zone. The case included comorbidities.

· Date of death: April 21. A female in her 80s in Calgary Zone. The case included comorbidities.

· Date of death: April 22. A male in his 90s linked to the outbreak at Extendicare Hillcrest in Calgary Zone. The case included comorbidities.

· Date of death: April 22. A female in her 70s in Central Zone. The case included comorbidities.

· Date of death: April 22. A female in her 70s in Calgary Zone. The case included comorbidities.

There are now 549 Albertans in hospital due to COVID-19, up 31, including 125 in intensive care, up nine.

Alberta has administered 1,319,837 doses of COVID-19 vaccine as of April 22.

The Central Zone has 2,035 active cases, up 41 from Thursday. The zone has 53 people in hospital, down three, and five people are in the ICU at Red Deer Regional, the same as yesterday. The zone has had 131 deaths, one of which was reported today.

There have been 2,558 variant cases in Central Zone, all but 26 of which have been the B.1.1.7 version. The remainder are the P.1 variant. There are 1,379 active variant cases in the zone, and five people have died from a variant in the zone.
