Premier not sure if it's the "right fit"

Kenney pumps brakes on Ottawa’s proposed child-care plan for Alberta

Apr 21, 2021 | 1:25 PM

Premier Jason Kenney says he is not sure if the federal government’s proposed child-care plan would be the right fit for Alberta.

The plan has been widely celebrated by children and family advocates for being forward-thinking, particularly for low- and middle-class Canadians.

The Liberals are investing nearly $30 billion in drastically reducing the costs of child care by 50 per cent in 2022 and down to $10 a day in the next five years. Federal budget documents show the plan will allow an estimated 240,000 parents to enter the workforce.

However, Kenney says the federal Liberal plan would only support what he calls “urban 9-to-5 government- and union-run institutional daycare options.”
