New lawyer for man charged in Lacombe fatal shooting

A man charged in a Lacombe homicide in 2019 now has a new lawyer in place.

In Red Deer provincial court on Monday, court learned that Tyler John Campbell, 28, will now be represented by Lacombe defence lawyer Rod Clark.

Campbell, of Lacombe, was previously represented by Red Deer defence lawyer Michael Scrase, who successfully lobbied to be removed from the file during Campbell’s last appearance earlier this month.

Campbell pled guilty to manslaughter last November in the shooting death of 20-year-old Jeffery Kraft, of Ponoka, on Dec. 15, 2019.

However, after a joint Crown and defence submission of a seven-year prison sentence for Campbell being twice rejected by Judge Jim Hunter, the case came to a point where Campbell is now anticipated to vacate his guilty plea.

That application is expected to come forward to Judge Hunter on May 10 when Campbell’s case returns to court.

Should that happen, a date would be set for Hunter to either approve or deny the application. If approved, a date would be set for a preliminary hearing to determine if there’s enough evidence for the case to go to trial.

If Hunter were to deny an application for Campbell to strike his previous guilty plea, a date for sentencing would be set.

Campbell’s co-accused in the incident, 22-year-old Amie Rogers, of Lacombe, had her counts withdrawn following a preliminary hearing last November.
