Special teams proved costly yet again for the Red Deer Rebels Friday night in Medicine Hat.

The Rebels gave up three goals to the WHL’s top-ranked powerplay as the Tigers erased a 2-0 deficit to defeat Red Deer 4-2.

It was Red Deer’s 10th straight loss as they fell to 2-13-2-0 on the season while Medicine Hat improved to 10-3-0-1 with their fifth win in six games.

The Rebels opened the scoring midway through the first period as Ben King brought in a stretch pass from Arshdeep Bains, went in alone and slid one through the five hole of Tigers goalie Garin Bjorklund for his sixth goal and team leading 16th point of the year.

Red Deer opened the second period with three consecutive powerplays that included an extended 5-on-3. They came up empty on the man advantage, but just as the final Tigers penalty had expired King fired a shot top shelf past Bjorklund for his second goal on the night. Kyle Masters and Zak Smith assisted on the goal 4:36 into the middle frame.

Medicine Hat replied with a powerplay goal at the 13:34 mark as Corson Hopwo beat Rebels goalie Ethan Anders from in tight for his 11th goal of the season. Red Deer led 2-1 heading into the third period.

Brett Kemp tied the game for the Tigers 3:29 into period three when he beat Anders for his ninth goal on the year.

Eric Van Impe scored the game winner just 33 seconds later when he joined the rush and put home his third goal of the season.

Hopwo tipped home a pass from Ryan Chyzowski for his second goal of the game just past the 13-minute park to seal the deal for Medicine Hat in their comeback win.

Medicine Hat outshot Red Deer 37-25 on the night and was 3-for-5 on the powerplay, which improved to a league best 41.8 per cent on the season, while the Rebels were 0-for-8.

These two teams meet again Saturday night at 7 p.m. at Westerner Park Centrium. 106.7 REWIND Radio has the live broadcast starting at 6:50 p.m.
