Red Deer with 318 active COVID-19 cases, another death

Red Deer has climbed back above the 300-mark when it comes to active COVID-19 cases.

Thursday’s numbers from the province show the city with 318 active cases, an increase of 39 from Wednesday. It’s Red Deer’s highest active case count since there were 362 reported on March 5.

Recoveries are up 11 to 3,118 as the total number of COVID-19 cases attributed to Red Deer rose by 51 to 3,472.

Red Deer also added another death stemming from COVID-19 to bring the total to 36.

The Central Zone as a whole has 1,515 active cases as of Thursday, an increase of 113 over Wednesday, and 37 hospitalizations, including five in the ICU at Red Deer Regional Hospital. The zone has now had 129 deaths stemming from COVID-19, including two reported over the past 24 hours.

Province-wide, Alberta reported another 1,646 cases of COVID-19 on Thursday out of 17,198 tests for a positivity rate of 9.5 per cent. Over 60 per cent of Thursday’s new cases (1,040) were identified as variant cases of concern.

Active cases in the province are up 654 to 16,223, which includes 8,682 (53.5 per cent) variant cases of concern.

Alberta added 927 recovered cases in the past 24 hours for a total of 147,920.

There are now 416 Albertans hospitalized due to COVID-19, including 86 in intensive care.

Alberta added five more deaths stemming from COVID-19 to bring the total to 2,034.

The province has administered 1,004,123 doses of vaccine at the latest update.

It was also learned on Thursday that a Lethbridge physician has become the seventh health-care worker in Alberta to die from COVID-19.

Dr. Wayne John Edwards died in hospital on Tuesday. He was 66.

Alberta Health says the source of exposure in his death is unknown.
