tax penalty bylaw amendment approved

Red Deer County tables 2021 tax rates

Red Deer County council has given first reading to the 2021 Tax Rate Bylaw, and approved a temporary amendment to the Tax Penalty Bylaw to reduce 2021 Tax penalties.

Council has tabled a zero-rate increase on tax rates that officials say will equate to a 2.5% reduction in taxes collected for 2021. This decrease occurs as a result of the county seeing a 1.62% reduction in the overall taxable assessment.

“Maintaining last year’s tax rate will still allow Red Deer County to provide a high level of service for our residents and businesses. We are not interested in creating any more burden on the taxpayer than they already have,” said Mayor Jim Wood.

Notwithstanding the new Provincial Police Services Agreement that came into effect on April 1, 2020, the Bylaw reduces the penalty rate from 6% to 4% for the 2021 taxation year and continues to hold over the tax rate from 2020.
