Red Deer up to 226 active cases, outbreak confirmed at temporary shelter

Red Deer added 30 new cases of COVID-19 on Saturday, and now sits at 226 active cases, up 10 from Friday.

There have also now been 3,056 recoveries, an increase of 20.

The city has recorded a total of 3,316 cases and 34 deaths since the pandemic began. There hasn’t been a death added to the city’s total since March 23.

Meantime, Alberta Health confirms an outbreak of 22 cases at the Safe Harbour-operated temporary shelter in Red Deer, all of which are active. Executive Director Kath Hoffman says staff are working with AHS on solutions. The outbreak investigation began there March 30.

Alberta added 1,293 cases of COVID-19 on Saturday with a positivity rate of ~9.0 per cent and 14,371 tests completed.

Active cases now total 13,687, up 628, and of those, 6,529 are variants of concern, up 592. Variants make up 47.7 per cent of all active cases, up 2.2 per cent from Friday, and they have caused 36 deaths, up three from a day ago.

Five additional COVID-19-linked deaths were reported to Alberta Health in the last 24 hours to bring the province’s total to 2,012. Three of the latest deaths were in Calgary Zone, and one each in Edmonton and South Zone. One occurred on April 3 and the rest on April 8.

There are now 349 Albertans in hospital due to COVID-19, up 16 from Friday, including 84 in intensive care, up one.

Alberta has administered 818,689 doses of COVID-19 vaccine as of April 8, while 154,017 Albertans are fully immunized.

The Central Zone has 1,124 active cases, up 74 from Friday. There are 30 hospitalizations in the zone, up two, and there are eight people receiving intensive care for COVID-19 at Red Deer Regional Hospital, the same as yesterday. The zone has recorded 123 deaths, none of which were reported today.

Meantime, the zone has 655 active cases confirmed to be variants, up 85, and two Central Zone residents have died from a variant. In the last day, the zone added 108 variant cases, up to 1,106.
