Red Deer Public encourages feedback on draft K-6 curriculum

Apr 9, 2021 | 2:59 PM

Officials with Red Deer Public Schools (RDPSD) are encouraging parents and the local community to have a close look at the government’s newly proposed draft K-6 curriculum and offer some feedback.

Following its release on Mar. 29, the draft curriculum has garnered plenty of backlash and little support so far.

“The new curriculum is a 500 page document, so we will need to take a detailed and authentic look at both its contents as well as how teachers will be able to deliver the outcomes,” reads a release from Red Deer Public Schools. “We will be checking with our schools and curriculum team before commenting on specifics as well as using the opportunities to provide feedback and suggestions that Alberta Education has provided.”

In the meantime, the Government of Alberta is seeking input on the draft curriculum, with RDPSD urging its parents and community to take the time to review and understand the curriculum before sharing their perspectives.

“Teachers will be providing input from the classroom perspective, however, all perspectives are vital as part of the curriculum review process,” the statement continues. “This curriculum is important and will impact teaching and learning for years, so now is the opportunity to make sure we get it right for our students.”

Government officials say they are meeting with key education partners and interest groups, including school boards, superintendents, various councils and associations.

During the 2021-22 school year, government officials note classrooms around the province are invited to voluntarily pilot the draft K-6 curriculum and provide input.

It’s anticipated feedback collected from the survey and the classroom pilot will be incorporated into the draft K-6 curriculum before it is implemented province-wide in September 2022.
