54th Street road extension on track, despite rail crossing setback

Rocky Mountain House’s new 54th Street Extension project was already delayed last year due to weather, now CN Rail is having issues getting the supplies needed for the warning lights at the rail crossing, which could lead to it not be installed on time for project completion.

Much of the project was completed last year, as well as completing new pavement, curb and gutters, along with moving the fence back and installing concrete barriers at the new intersection at 49 Avenue and Edgerton Drive.

Town of Rocky Mountain House Director of Engineering and Operations, Rob Shanks, said that the concrete barriers were not installed due to the road itself, but more of an issue involving speed and intoxication of drivers.

“New reflectors and lighting and the soon to be stop sign on the west bound lane should help to minimize the problem,” he explained.

The project is slated to start back up by mid-June, which would see the final surface work be completed such as sidewalks, curbs and gutters, pavement as well as lighting and landscaping.

However according to CN Rail, the manufacturing plant that makes crossing signals is shut down. Shanks says it’s uncertain as to when CN would receive the materials needed.

The Town is currently looking at alternatives that could ensure the road is opened within its expected finishing time in September, weather permitting.

They’ve discussed setting a speed limit at 30km/h as well as stop signs with stop bars and a parking restriction near the crossing for visibility.

Shanks stated that CN/CP have said with those alternatives, it shouldn’t be an issue opening the crossing when the time comes.
