Once again the Red Deer Rebels opened the scoring versus the Edmonton Oil Kings. But once again Edmonton stormed back with a string of unanswered goals in a 5-1 win Saturday afternoon in WHL action at the Downtown Community Arena in Edmonton.

Edmonton is now 5-0 versus the Rebels this season and has won 16 straight over Red Deer dating back to Dec. 2018.

A milestone moment for Rebels defenceman Jace Weir came 5:41 into the first period when he beat Oil Kings goalie Sebastian Cossa with a wrister from the point for his first WHL goal.

Edmonton tied it just over five minutes with yet another powerplay goal versus Red Deer. Liam Keeler shot from along the left boards and Rebels netminder Byron Fancy made a pad save, but the rebound bounced off the skate of defenceman Mason Ward and into the Rebels net for Keeler’s third goal of the year.

The Oil Kings went ahead 2-1 at the 18:22 mark as Dylan Guenther, the WHL’s player of the month, tipped home his 10th goal of the season from a nice pass by Josh Williams.

There was just one goal in the second period and it came at the 17:52 mark as Carter Souch took a short pass in tight from Liam Keeler and beat a sprawled out Fancy for his second goal of the year.

Edmonton added two more goals in the third period. Kade Oliver netted his sixth of the year at 2:47 and Jalen Luypen added eighth of the campaign at 5:19 to wrap this one up for the Oil Kings.

Edmonton outshot Red Deer 32-21 in the game and was 1-for-4 on the powerplay while the Rebels were 0-for-3.

Guenther was the game’s first star with a goal and an assist. Souch was named second star and Cossa took third star honours.

A bright note for the Rebels was the return of defenceman Kyle Masters to the lineup after he missed the past few games due to injury.

These two teams wrap up their season series Monday night in Red Deer. Game time from the Westerner Park Centrium is 7 p.m. and you can catch the game live on 106.7 REWIND Radio.
