Red Deer RCMP charge motorist travelling at extreme speed

After receiving the summons, RCMP say the driver returned to the roadside with a sign protesting the charge. As a result, three vehicles nearly collided, and the individual directed to stop.

When he persisted in his actions, however, he was charged under the Traffic Safety Act with engaging in a stunt that is likely to distract, startle or interfere with users of the roadway, resulting in a $567 fine.

“Citizens making the decision to travel at such extreme speeds pose a serious risk to the public,” says Sergeant Mike Zufferli with the Red Deer RCMP Traffic Unit. “These extreme speeds show a wanton disregard for the safety of others, and was exacerbated by this driver’s actions where, in the middle of the day, in a heavily populated downtown core, chose to dangerously distract others. We will continue to work tirelessly to address this behavior through enforcement and education.”

According to RCMP, Automated Traffic Enforcement operates in areas where speeding has been identified as a community concern, where there is a documented history of collisions, and/or in areas where conventional enforcement is ineffective or unsafe.

These tools, along with conventional traffic enforcement and education campaigns, are said to help make Red Deer’s roads safer.
