Student Athletes Giving Back

RDC Athletics helps feed community members in need

Student athletes from Red Deer College (RDC) have stepped-up in support of our community to help those struggling to meet their needs during the COVID-19 pandemic.

With COVID-19 creating a variety of health and financial challenges for Albertans, in addition to the economic downturn, some local residents have experienced reduced income, job loss, and difficulties paying for necessities, such as food.

Recognizing that need, RDC student-athletes collected $323 in donations and 1,225 pounds of food at their Drive-Thru Food Drive in support of the Red Deer Food Bank on Mar. 27.

“The RDC Student-Athletes Advisory Council has been a catalyst in identifying and organizing a range of important initiatives this year, such as the Drive-Thru Food Drive,” says Kylie Thomas, RDC Vice President Academic & Research, in a press release. “The student-athletes have shown tremendous leadership and dedication in continuing their mission of connecting with the community throughout the year despite the absence of competition.”

This event, which was led by Amy Szymanek (Queens Basketball), Jaycee Bourke (Queens Curling), and Devin Saunders (Kings Cross Country Running/Indoor Track), involved RDC student-athletes from a variety of Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) sports.

Adhering to Alberta Health Services (AHS) protocols, student-athletes wore masks and socially distanced as they collected the dropped-off food items in front of the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre.

The collective efforts from RDC student-athletes, the College community, and central Albertans on this project are anticipated to have a positive impact in the region.

“Over the past year, the Red Deer Food Bank has faced challenges and overcome them because of the overwhelming support from our community,” says Alice Kolisnyk, Deputy Director, Red Deer Food Bank Society. “The RDC Athletics Drive-Thru Food Drive is another example of how Red Deer steps up to assist others in need. The donations gathered at this event will go a long way to feed those who are vulnerable. Thank you RDC Athletics and Red Deer.”

This type of community involvement is described as an important part of the entire student-athlete experience at Red Deer College, and is one of several key components in identifying award and scholarship recipients at the end of each RDC Athletics season.

Even though there was no formal competition this past year, RDC Athletics 2020/2021 Awards & Recognition will proceed to help acknowledge the student-athletes’ academic achievements, volunteerism, dedication to training, and leadership within their teams, RDC Athletics, and central Alberta.

This year’s award recipients will be celebrated along with the graduating Red Deer College student-athletes over the next few weeks through RDC Athletics’ social media channels.

College officials say the Student-Athletes Advisory Council is also collaborating with RDC’s Marketing & Communications department to create an Athletics Year End Video to release in early April. It will feature interviews with coaches and players, clips of home workouts, and footage of team practices and bonding activities, as allowed within public health guidelines.
