Another win, loss weekend for Thunder

It was another win one, lose one weekend for the Drayton Valley Thunder in AJHL action.

Friday night, the Thunder pulled out a 4-3 win over the Grande Prairie Storm at the Omniplex.

The Thunder and Storm traded goals in the first period, with Brett Bamber opening things for Drayton Valley, scoring at 7:19. Dan McIntyre scored at 15:12 to tie the game for Grande Prairie.

The Thunder power play struck three times in the second period on goals from Grayson Reid, Dexton Mozell, and Adam Oates to give Drayton Valley a 4 – 1.

The Storm would get a power play goal of their own from Paycen Bjorklund at 18:23.

Nathanial Bierd would make it close with a goal 21 seconds into the third period for Grande Prairie to make it 4-3, but Drayton Valley would hold on for the victory.

Sunday’s game saw the Whitecourt Wolverines build a 4-1 lead before holding off the Thunder for a 4-3 win.

Bamber scored at 18:48 of the first to make it 1-0 Drayton Valley. The second was all Wolverines starting with a goal from Thomas Vela at 6:26, followed by Dylan Witzke on the power play at 15:55 and again at 16:37 even strength. Bjorn Robinson added another power play tally for Whitecourt at 17:19 of the second.

Just 1:32 into the third, the Thunder struck back as Colson Gengenbach scored, and at 11:56, Tyler Blocha would make it 4-3.

The Thunder sit at 5-5-0 in third place in the AJHL North Division.

Drayton Valley will head to Whitecourt for a game Friday at 7 p.m. and to Grande Prairie for a 6 p.m. tilt on Sunday.
