Six local high school students take home medals in Virtual Regional Skills Competition

Six high school students from Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools (RDCRS) recently recognized for their exceptional skills in Career and Technology Studies will soon have the chance to test those skills at a provincial level.

The students from both École Secondaire Notre Dame High School and St. Joseph High School recently brought home medals after competing in a Virtual Regional Skills competition.

Officials say the students competed in different areas of Career and Technology Studies with other schools across central Alberta over the past month.

Gold: First place

  • Owen Homan, Grade 10 student – Carpentry – École Secondaire Notre Dame High School
  • Nadja Bergstrom, Grade 10 student – Hairstyling (Junior) – St. Joseph High School

Silver: Second place

  • Austin Goruk, Grade 10 student – Carpentry – École Secondaire Notre Dame High School

Bronze: Third place

  • Abrieanna Waddell, Grade 10 student – Culinary Arts – École Secondaire Notre Dame High School
  • Eric Scafe, Grade 10 student – Carpentry – École Secondaire Notre Dame High School
  • Matteo Montalto, Grade 12 student – Welding – St. Joseph High School

The students will now be able to continue onto the 29th Provincial Skills Canada Competition hosted virtually on April 14-23.

“As a school community, we are very proud of Matteo and Nadja. They have worked hard to get to this level and both have bright futures ahead of them,” said Principal Graeme Daniel at St. Joseph High School, in a press release. “A special thanks to all the teachers and volunteers that support Skills Competitions and our youth. It is their support that allows our students’ lights to shine.”

“In a year of incredible challenges, we are so impressed with the initiative and dedication of all our students who participated in this year’s Skills competition,” added Principal Rose McQuay at École Secondaire Notre Dame High School. “As Grade 10 students, they have demonstrated tremendous skill and will continue to represent our school and division well in the coming years. Congratulations and thank you to the staff and students involved in this exciting process.”

“We are incredibly proud of our students not only for taking home some impressive hardware but more importantly for stepping up and competing in Skills events,” noted Jeff Lerouge, Career and Technology Studies Department Head at École Secondaire Notre Dame High School. “It takes an incredible amount of time to prepare for these competitions but students walk away with an impressive skill set that will carry them into future endeavours. We love seeing our students use their God-given talents to excel in their future careers.”
