30 percent tax rebate on municipal taxes

Brazeau County offering tax rebate again for residents who pay property taxes on time

Brazeau County will once again be offering a tax rebate this year for those who pay their property taxes on time.

At a Special Meeting of Council on March 23, Brazeau County Council passed a motion to again offer a 30% tax rebate on municipal taxes to residential, farmland, and commercial property owners who pay the full amount of their taxes by the due date of June 30.

Council voted for the tax relief as the struggling oil and gas sector and ongoing financial strains from the COVID-19 pandemic continue to create economic challenges for families and individuals.

In order to be eligible to receive the rebate, property owners must pay their current taxes and any tax arrears (unpaid tax amounts from previous years) in full by June 30, 2021. Tax and assessment notices that will be mailed in late May will not reflect the rebate amount in the total owing. The rebate will be applied at the time of payment, and property owners will be informed of their rebate amount via an insert in the tax and assessment notices.

The 30% municipal tax rebate on residential and farmland property tax is in addition to a 30% reduction in the tax rate (also known as mill rate) that was introduced in 2015 and has been retained every year since then.

“This will mark the sixth year Council has granted a municipal tax rebate to commercial businesses in Brazeau County and the second year the rebate has also been applied to residential and farmland properties,” says Reeve Bart Guyon. “We believe strongly in leaving as much money as possible in taxpayers’ pockets.”

The 30% applies to the municipal portion of taxes only. Requisitions for the Alberta School Foundation Fund and Brazeau Seniors’ Foundation are not subject to the rebate but must be part of the full payment required by June 30.
