WRSD proceeding with design development and naming of new Drayton Valley Replacement School

Wild Rose School Division (WRSD) is making progress on design development and coming up with a new name for the Drayton Valley Replacement School.

WRSD is proceeding quickly with a schematic design that was anticipated to be completed by March 15. Design development will begin immediately after the completion of the schematic design and is anticipated to be completed in May.

The Drayton Valley Replacement School Naming Committee held its first meeting on March 4. The committee is made up of administrators, staff, and parents from HW Pickup School and Drayton Christian School.

The committee has agreed that it would be beneficial to have a common campus name for the shared building in addition to both schools having their names posted on the building.

The committee says advantages of a campus name include:

  • Provides a name for referring specifically to the common spaces that the two schools will share.
  • Provides potential to have some shared athletic teams or programs that include students and staff from both schools and that could be identified by using the campus name rather than either of the two school names. Not all teams and programs would be shared in this way, but there could be some benefits for some of the larger teams and programs to be shared in this way.
  • Having a campus name (in addition to each school having their own school name) promotes a spirit of cooperation between the two schools.

In addition to seeking input from the community on a campus name, it was decided that the committee would also seek input from the community regarding the name of HW Pickup School. Survey questions have been designed that will be used to get feedback, and answers will be reviewed by the respective school councils.

The committee also decided to wait until after the WRSD Board of Trustees hosts their community engagement in Drayton Valley before posting the naming survey.

The community engagement will provide an opportunity for the Board to provide details to the community regarding the replacement school project, and a date for this community engagement is still being determined.

Once a date for the community engagement has been set and the survey has been posted, the committee will meet again to review the feedback from the community and then make recommendations to the Board of Trustees regarding potential names for both the campus and the middle school. The Board has the final say on this matter and will by motion select appropriate names.
