Multi-Use All-Wheel Park project to get underway in Penhold

Construction on what is being described as an exciting new recreational space in Penhold is expected to get underway this spring.

According to Town officials, work on a Pump Track and Skate Park is expected to begin in May and be completed this fall.

The initiative gained momentum last year after representatives from the Town of Penhold and the Penhold & District Optimist Club teamed up to form a committee dedicated to bringing the facility to the community.

“The wheels have been in motion for this project for many years and we are excited to break ground for the Multi-Use All-Wheel Park (MAP) this spring,” says Penhold Mayor Mike Yargeau, in a press release.

The collaborative project is expected to bring a modified version of the long-anticipated skate park, along with a pump track feature to create a Multi-Use All-Wheel Park (MAP) south of the Penhold Regional Multiplex.

Town officials credit the Penhold & District Optimist Club for making the project a reality through their continued commitment to fundraising and advocacy for the project.

“I look forward to being one of the first to try out the MAP, but then I will enjoy watching my children, and users from all over central Alberta, enjoying Penhold’s unique dual purpose recreational amenity,” added Yargeau. “We are looking for feedback on the proposed design plan and invite anyone with an interest to fill in the comment form on our website.”

For those unfamiliar with what a “pump track” is, Town officials describe it as a closed-loop track with rolling bumps, banked corners and berms (swoopy, banked turns) for biking, rollerblading and scooters.

Pump tracks are said to be designed to maximize momentum so users can ride the pump track with minimal exertion. Pump tracks are felt to be a perfect structure for practising balance, learning skills and improving confidence.

The skate park portion of the Penhold MAP will entail seven key features, including a bank ramp, slappy rail, manual pad, flat rail, flat ledge, quarter pipe extension, and quarter pipe transition.

The website form for comments will be available until 9:00 a.m. on Mar. 29 at www.townofpenhold.ca.
