Red Deer records 34th COVID death, active cases at 132

Red Deer has suffered another death stemming from COVID-19, bringing the city’s total to 34.

The latest death, a man in his 80s, occurred Monday (March 22) and is linked to the outbreak at Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre. Alberta Health says the case included comorbidities.

Red Deer’s active COVID-19 case count rose by eight on Tuesday to sit at 132. There have been 2,823 recoveries, an increase of seven as the total number of cases attributed to the city rose by 15 to 2,988.

Province-wide, Alberta reported another 465 cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday. That’s out of 7,328 test results for a positivity rate of 6.3 per cent.

The number of active cases in the province continues to rise, going from 6,176 on Monday to 6,231, an increase of 55.

There are 290 Albertans in hospital due to COVID-19, an increase of 10, including 53 in intensive care, up five.

Three additional COVID-19 deaths were reported to Alberta Health in the last 24 hours to bring the province’s total as of Sunday to 1,971. The other two were both linked to the outbreak at Churchill Manor in Edmonton Zone, a man in his 90s and woman in her 80s on March 22.

As of Tuesday, there have been 1,908 total variant cases of COVID-19 in the province, an increase of 195. Of these cases 1,886 are the U.K. variant. There are 305 variant cases in the Central Zone.

The Central Zone has 578 active cases as of Monday and 35 hospitalizations, including seven receiving intensive care at Red Dee Regional Hospital. The zone has had 121 deaths attributed to COVID-19.
