A shorthanded Red Deer Rebels squad had a tough of it Sunday night as they fell 5-2 to the Edmonton Oil Kings in WHL action.

With Mason Ward out due to injury the Rebels were minus the services of three of their top four defencemen, along with Kyle Masters and Joel Sexsmith, and were only able to dress five blue liners for this game.

Edmonton opened the scoring 11:02 into the game when Kade Oliver took a beautiful pass from Dylan Guenther and outwaited Rebels goalie Ethan Anders before netting his fourth goal of the season.

The Rebels replied just eleven seconds later when Jace Isley stole the puck in the Oil Kings zone and fed Zak Smith who beat Edmonton goalie Colby Knight for his second goal on the year.

Scott Atkinson gave Edmonton a 4-1 lead 4:41 into period two after Josh Williams won a battle for the puck behind the Rebels net and put it out front for the Oil Kings captain to capitalize on.

Josh Tarzwell tied it for Red Deer on a strong individual effort as he charged the net with the puck and fired it past Knight for his team leading fifth tally of the season 11:54 into period two.

The Oil Kings would score twice before the end starting less than two minutes later. Tyler Horstmann put a rebound home past Anders at the 13:34 mark. Then defenceman Ethan Cap joined the rush and tapped in a great feed from Jake Neighbours at 19:13.

The lone goal of the third period came at the 15:44 mark when Josh Williams won a race for a rebound to tap home his fifth goal of the season, and fourth goal of the season, putting the wraps on another Oil Kings win.

Edmonton outshot Red Deer 36-18 on the night as Red Deer native Colby Knight picked up the win in his first ever WHL game for the Oil Kings. Knight, selected 92nd overall by Edmonton at the 2018 WHL Draft, played in three games this season with the Red Deer Optimist Chiefs prior to the shutdown and posted a 2-1 record with one shutout and a .907 save-percentage.

Both teams were 0-for-3 on the power play in the game.

The Rebels fall to 2-6-2-0 on the season while the Oil Kings remain perfect at 7-0-0-0.

Red Deer has a bye next weekend.
