Alberta adds 184 variant cases of COVID-19 in last 24 hours

Alberta confirmed 555 new cases of COVID-19 on Sunday, for a total of 141,934 confirmed cases since the start of the pandemic.

That’s out of 11,405 test results over the past 24 hours for a positivity rate of ~4.9 per cent, about 0.3 per cent lower than yesterday.

The number of active cases in the province is up 353 to 5,971, while recoveries are up 200 to a total of 134,000.

There are 282 Albertans in hospital due to COVID-19, up three from Saturday, including 47 in intensive care, the same as yesterday.

Two additional COVID-19 deaths were reported to Alberta Health in the last 24 hours to bring the province’s total as of Sunday to 1,963. The deaths occurred between March 19-20 and were both in Edmonton Zone.

As of Sunday, there have been 1,601 total variant cases of COVID-19 in the province, 1,581 of which are the U.K. variant. The overall total is 184 higher than Saturday, with all new cases in the past day the U.K. variant.

A total of 262 variant cases, up 31, have been identified in Central Zone, all of them the U.K. variant.

The number of active COVID-19 cases in Red Deer as of Sunday sits at 123, up 12 from Saturday. There have been 2,811 recoveries, an increase of six as the total number of cases attributed to Red Deer rose by 18 to a total of 2,967. The number of deaths in Red Deer linked to COVID-19 is 33, with the last one tallied March 14.

Alberta Health confirmed Saturday there are zero active cases at the Olymel outbreak, with 518 cases confirmed and three deaths there since November. The outbreak status will remain in place for another several days.

The Central Zone has 575 active cases as of Sunday, an increase of 41. There are 36 hospitalizations, up three, and six people are receiving intensive care for COVID-19 at Red Deer Regional Hospital, the same number as yesterday. The zone has had 120 deaths as a result of COVID-19.
